- Trustee of the North Shore Sanitary District – working to protect Lake Michigan from sewage
- Mayor of Highland Park for 12 years
- A state legislator, representing New Trier Township communities for 20 years in the General Assembly - Served as the first Chairman of the House Environment Committee
